Why Not Every Gift Needs a Logo: The Subtle Art of Branded Gifting
After more than seven years in the corporate gifting industry, there’s one conversation I keep coming back to with clients: where and when branding actually works. It’s easy to assume that every item you gift should have your logo on it, especially when corporate gifting companies push it hard as an upsell. After all, you're investing in gifts to keep your brand top-of-mind. But here’s the truth, just because you can brand something, doesn’t mean you should.
Take cheeseboards, for example. I’m often asked to brand them, and while we absolutely can, I usually advise clients to pause and think about the purpose of the gift. A cheeseboard lives in someone’s personal space. It’s something they might pull out for guests, for a dinner party, or even just a quiet wine and cheese night at home. When that item is stamped with a logo that feels out of place, it risks being pushed to the back of a cupboard or even worse chucked in the bin, unused and forgotten. That’s the exact opposite of what we want.
I always tell my clients to put themselves in the recipient's shoes. If you had some friends or family over to your house would you be less inclined to use a cheese board with someone's logo on it? If the answer is yes, then great, we're on the same page!
But then again, it’s not a hard no across the board (excuse the pun). Subtle branding—like a discreet engraving or an elegant foil-stamped monogram, can work beautifully. But it's all about context and intention.
On the flip side, products like cooler bags, picnic sets, or BBQ utensils? Those are perfect candidates for branding. They’re functional, often used outdoors or in group settings, and when branded well, they can be real conversation starters. That’s the sweet spot. Items that add value to someone’s life and keep your brand front of mind without being intrusive.
The same principle applies to new starter packs—a welcome gift that not only makes a great first impression but sets the tone for how a company values its people. In these kits, branded items like water bottles, travel mugs, and notebooks or pens make total sense. They’re practical, used daily, and they help new employees feel like they’re part of the team from day one. Branded stationery or tech accessories can also be a subtle but professional way to reinforce brand identity in a workspace.
Again, the goal is utility with impact. A thoughtfully branded product or gift, especially one used in public or professional settings, creates recurring moments of brand exposure without ever feeling forced. Because ultimately, the most effective gift is the one that’s used and loved. When a recipient genuinely enjoys a gift, when it feels thoughtful, personal, and not overly commercial, it naturally leads to better outcomes: more word-of-mouth, stronger brand connection, and yes, more positive reviews.
And trust me, if it's not branded but they use it often, they won’t forget who gave it to them. So next time you’re thinking about your corporate gifts, ask yourself: Will this item live in someone’s home or heart, or just their cupboard or bin?
